Winter Can Affect How We Feel

This entry was posted in News on by .

Indiana winters can cause you to feel down and sleep more than usual. Don’t be too quick to accept this as a normal part of life. You may be suffering from seasonal affective disorder. At school, we also see this in some of our students.

Not everyone is suffering from SAD, some are suffering from a less-severe form of mood changes called the “winter blues.” If you think you (or your child) may be experiencing SAD or winter blues, you may try the following things:

  •         Expose yourself to sunlight whenever possible.
  •         Incorporate more physical activity each day.
  •         Socialize with friends, family and colleagues often.

Reading at Home is Fun

Crothersville Schools ensures that each student is given the time to read each day. This is essential in order to learn and grow as a reader. Reading is all around us and it is our job, both as teachers and as parents, to get our students/children involved. Since reading is important at every level, what better time than now?

We have many ways that we get students involved in the classroom, but reading at home is equally as important. Here are some creative ways to get your children excited about reading at home.

Take family trips to the library. Where else can you choose from millions of free books? You can even check out books for your e-reader. After your trip, try to set aside time each day where everyone in your family sits down to read. 15-20 minutes is all you need.

Find websites that interest your child. Reading on the computer is a great way to get reluctant readers to read. They just don’t realize that they are reading, they just think they are having fun on the computer.

Remember, reading is everywhere. Whether it is a menu at a restaurant, or the cereal box at the breakfast table, reading is a must. Make sure your child is given the time to do it every day!

This Month Students will Take the ISTEP+

This month, students will be taking the ISTEP+ assessment. While teachers have been dedicated to preparing students academically for this test, parents have a role in the test taking process as well. Please make sure your child receives the following on test days:

  •         Make sure your child gets enough sleep on the night before the test
  •         Make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast
  •         Keep a positive attitude about assessments
  •         Talk about the assessment with your child, as this can reduce stress
  •         Encourage your child to do their best
  •         We wish the best of luck to all students taking the ISTEP+ this year.
